Misrepresenting ‘Critical Race Theory’ impoverishes the church

We’re living through a cultural moment in which people discredit ideas by politicizing them. The idea loses its original meaning, and subsequent debate revolves around identity.

Critical Race Theory, or CRT, is a prime example. This legal theory suggests that the American criminal justice system has racism embedded into its structure.

It dates back to the 1970s. I bet you never heard of CRT before last year, but apparently it’s going to destroy America and the Gospel.

Some claim that CRT depicts white people as inherently racist, makes them feel guilty for simply being white, and demands apologies from them. Yet critics struggle to find CRT advocates who actually say such things (Brookings Institute).

That hasn’t stopped states from banning CRT in schools, despite CRT not being taught in schools (NBC News). It hasn’t stopped church leaders from talking about CRT as though an academic theory can defeat God.

Christians who care about truth should care about misrepresentations of CRT and other ideas. Discrediting different perspectives prevents learning and impoverishes the church.
