I don’t have any statistics about why more people identify as LGBTQ or trans than in the past, but I would hypothesize that 1) prevalence of LGBTQ and transgender identity haven’t changed but willingness to come out has changed and that 2) trans people receive more media coverage and other visibility, so we’re more aware of them. I applaud you for recognizing that people’s intolerance of difference needs to be deconstructed.
