Thanks for reading and for such a thoughtful comment! I agree with your sense. The enlightenment, as Richard Rohr has said, made Christians feel really stupid. So they developed a new way of understanding the Bible as a way of saying, “Hey Science, we have methods and knowledge, too,” and as you point out, it caused more problems than good.
