Thanks for sharing these observations. I’ve also read and listened to many of the “why I left the church” stories, and I would add that for many women “purity culture” does much more than minimize the power of grace for premarital sex. It also makes girls responsible for men’s lusting and purity. They’re sexual temptations and thus threats to boys, even full grown men. They need to cover up and avoid any behavior that could be perceived as flirting. Girls get the message that their worth stems from their bodies and attractiveness, except they also ought to be ashamed of those things. They’re viewed and treated as sexual objects, threatening temptations, and commodities, rather than full humans made in God’s image. I highly recommend Sheila Gregoire’s The Great Sex Rescue, Kristin Kobes du Mez’s Jesus and John Wayne, and the social media channel Talk Purity to Me.
