This is a thoughtful, respectful response that pushes my thinking and the conversation forward, and I thank you for it. I agree that we need some kind of anchor.
At its core, this article calls for multiple anchors: the Holy Spirit, the emotions and intuitions through which Spirit may “speak,” the emotions and intuitions formed by our relationship with and study of God, our faith traditions and communities, our friends and family, and, yes, the Bible and Biblical scholarship.
One of my concerns is that many Christians neglect other anchors—one of which is God Himself in the form of the Holy Spirit—in favor of relying almost entirely on the Bible. What do we lose? What do we miss?
